Ettore Sottsass, sofa set “Westside”. Made by Knoll International, 1982/83. Polyurethane foam rubber. The sofa set is conceived in blocky geometrical shapes, which seem at first sight to recall the Twenties. The strong primary colours of his upholstery - yellow, red, blue - are reminiscent of the Dutch De Stijl movement, especially the seats of the Dutch furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld. In reality, however, Sottsass is simply making a playful allusion, since Rietveld never designed a piece of furniture like this.
