Italian lighting designer Elio Martinelli studied set design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. After school, he began working in his fathers lighting business, while also taking on his own interior design projects. During this period, he started designing and producing his own lighting and established his own lighting company, Martinelli Luce. His designs represent the midcentury modernist Italian aesthetic; standout pieces that embrace new materials. Following an invitation from designer Gio Ponti, Martinelli his company participated in the first edition of the international design exhibition, Eurodomus, held in Turin in 1966. It went on to attend the 1968, 1970, and 1972 editions as well. This 2144 model floor lamp dates from 1968. It has a white steel frame holding a Perspex shade. The lamp stands in a very good condition, and gives a warm, soft light when its on.
