Saul Steinberg was a Romanian-American artist best known for his cartoon drawings in The New Yorker. By the late 1940s, Steinberg had become widely known in New York's intellectual and artistic circles. There was a huge demand to expose his drawings, and seemingly no subject was off limits.
At the same time, Charles and Ray Eames also achieved succes and admiration. Their designs were unlike anything that had ever been seen before; light, strong and elegant. They achieved immediate commercial success. A new groundbreaking design became the Eames Fiberglass Chair.
The close friendship that Charles and Ray Eames had with Saul Steinberg and his wife Hedda resulted in a playful collaboration. During their stay in the Eames house in Venice, Steinberg spontaneously drew a number of lively figures on the furniture, floors and walls of the studio. One of his drawings was a sleeping cat on an Eames Fiberglass Chair. This original chair is exposed in the Vitra Design Museum.
In June 2023, Vitra launched a limited edition of the Eames Fiberglass Armchair with the Steinberg Cat. This edition of 500 copies reproduces the original chair made that is for seen in the Vitra Design Museum. Each chair is hand-painted. The chair comes with the original cover and label and is numbered 111/500.
