This early 'Love' table lamp is one of Willy Rizzo’s most iconic lighting designs. Back around 2010, when I was younger, I used to personally deliver to my clients in Paris. I’d already been doing it for some time, but every trip to Paris still felt like an adventure, always hectic, always a race against time to keep to the delivery schedule.
After finishing my deliveries, I’d often take a little time to walk around Paris and explore. By chance, I came across a shop bearing the name Willy Rizzo. The name wasn’t unfamiliar to me, but I had no idea he actually had a physical store in Paris. So I stepped inside and to my surprise, Willy Rizzo himself was there, sitting at a desk in the back. He was surrounded by, I believe, his wife and daughter. It’s an image that stayed with me and one I’ll never forget.
We had a brief chat. He maintained a certain distance, but was courteous and kind. I happened to own one of his backgammon tables, so we talked about that and the designs he had created. Back then, there wasn’t as much documentation of his design work as there is today, but it’s nice to see how everything has since come together.
Willy Rizzo not only left a legacy as a designer of furniture, but he was also a photographer with an exceptional eye for elegance and spontaneity. He captured some of the most iconic figures of the 20th century and combined the best of both worlds.
