An exceptional early example of the Ambiguità console, designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli for Italian manufacturer Casigliani in 1983.
Ambiguità perfectly expresses the Vignellis’ architectural approach to furniture: a deceptively simple composition in which geometry, material, balance and visual tension become as important as function.
The console consists of a remarkably thin and elongated dark granite top, balanced upon two radically different supports: a monumental slab of white Carrara marble and a contrasting green cylindrical column.
The Carrara marble is particularly distinctive. One side has been intentionally left with a rough, irregular diagonal edge, juxtaposing the natural fractured character of the stone with the highly controlled geometry of the remaining composition.
This contrast lies at the heart of the design.
The name Ambiguità — “ambiguity” — refers to the deliberate uncertainty created by the composition: rough versus refined, natural versus geometric, heavy versus apparently weightless. Depending on the viewing angle, its three principal elements visually merge or separate, transforming a functional console into an architectural sculpture.
Designed in 1983, Ambiguità is among the more elusive furniture designs created by Lella and Massimo Vignelli for Casigliani. Far less frequently encountered than their iconic Metafora table, it represents a particularly pure expression of the designers’ fascination with elementary geometry and monumental materials.
This early production example retains the striking original combination of dark granite, Carrara marble and green cylindrical support.
A rare piece of Italian design in which the Vignellis reduce furniture to architecture, material and balance.
